I’m curious to hear perspectives from this community on SMB investing. For those who have invested in small and medium sized businesses, what factors have mattered most in evaluating opportunities, cash flow stability, management quality, or growth potential?

I’ve noticed more deals being syndicated through online tools, and I’m particularly interested in how a private equity investing platform changes access, due diligence, and risk for individual investors. Does it truly level the playing field, or does it introduce new complexities?

I’d love to learn what strategies, lessons, or red flags you’ve encountered when investing in SMBs.

I haven’t done SMB deals personally, mostly because the LP style “passive” setup can still carry a lot of risk, and your money can be locked up for years. Risk management gets tricky when you can’t just opt out, and secondary markets for small stakes are often thin, so liquidity is a real constraint. I do think these platforms can improve access, but they don’t eliminate the hard part. You still need to stress test cash flow, owner dependence, customer concentration, leverage, and incentives/fees. If the reporting is vague or the numbers look too polished, that’s a flag.
